Care for Puppies & Kittens

Bringing home a new kitten or puppy is a very exciting time! This cuddly, cute and joyful new member of the family won't be able to help but make everyone who interacts with them smile.

As fun as it may be, there is also some serious health care business that needs attending to throughout the first few months and year of your young pet's life.

The team at our hospital will develop a custom health care plan to meet your puppy or kitten's specific needs during their first year, and provide you with plenty of support and guidance along the way!

Puppies & Kittens, Sacramento Veterinarians

Your Pet’s First Appointment

A puppy's first vet appointment should be at about 6-weeks-old. Kittens should visit the vet for the first time at about 8 weeks of age.

During this initial visit, your pet will receive a complete physical examination to assess their overall health, look for signs of any congenital defects, and check for external parasites.

More About Physical Exams

We will also administer deworming medications for roundworms and hookworms, and the first round of puppy or kitten vaccinations.

More About Vaccines & Prevention

Finally, for kittens, we will perform a blood test to check for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.

Followup Appointments

Kittens and puppies should attend three or four veterinary appointments while they are between the ages of 6 and 16 weeks. These visits will allow our vets to assess your pet's overall health and to administer vaccinations on schedule.
